Floating Jelly
Glass · Unique
The glass came out of the kiln with the mould’s texture still on it, and the maker left it there. Light enters the lobed top and scatters before it reaches the underside, so the bell reads heavier through the middle than along its thin flared edge.
Steel wire hangs from beneath the bell and carries the whole weight down to a sandstone block the maker pulled from a demolished wall. The maker bends each tendril by hand, which is why no two fall the same way, and the stone stays unfinished.
A jellyfish keeps its shape by moving through water. This one keeps its shape by hanging above a rock.
